Coastal Formation

North America’s Atlantic Coast was formed nearly two hundred fifty million years ago when the supercontinent Pangaea began breaking apart.

The Americas were separated from Africa and Eurasia wherever rifts or fissures occurred along fault lines.

The Atlantic Ocean itself was born from the waters flowing into those ever-widening fissures. In time, the continents drifted apart to their present locations.

The DVD graphically illustrates how this continental migration, relentless mountain erosion, and extensive glaciation created the two different coastline environments that exist today along the Atlantic: the rocky coast; and the sand beaches and backwater bays of the barrier islands.
