Rocky Coast

The rocky coast of the North Atlantic is spectacular and beautiful. High, steep cliffs plunge straight down to the ocean. Surf pounds against the walls, sending up huge sprays. Majestic seabirds soar and swoop and dive.

This is where the Appalachian Mountains meet the edge of the sea. The broad coastal plain that once existed here is now gone.

An extensive ice sheet, formed during the most recent glacial period, covered the entire northern half of the North American continent east of the Rockies, and on the eastern coastline, it extended as far south as Long Island, New York.
